How to access your computer using LogMeIn

LogMeIn is software that allows you to access one computer from another.  For example, if you are at home and want to check your e-mail at work you could operate your PC at work as if you were sitting in front of it. We install LogMeIn on every business computer that we supply.

Do I need to install LogMeIn?

No. We have already installed the software on your computer and made the required configuration. You can try it out right now.

How do I use it?

Go to a different computer which has internet access, open Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox and go to this web site:

http://www.logmein.com

Enter the provided email address and password in the Login area to the right of the web site – we have already set up a login for you – and then press the grey LogMeIn button.

If we have not already sent you a username and password for the service then please contact us.

Once you have logged in you will see the status of your computer.  If you have left it switched on and connected to the internet you should see it as online (and therefore it will be underlined in blue).

Click on the name of your computer (it should be the only one listed) and when prompted, enter your usual username and password (i.e. the ones that you use on the PC that you are taking control of).

After a few seconds you can then press ‘Remote Control’ and you will now be able to use the remote machine just as if you were sitting in front of it.

Limitations

Graphically intensive programs, like computer games or CAD software, are often poorly controlled remotely and often give a garbled display or disconnect completely. The quality of the remote control is dependent upon a number of factors including the internet connection speed at both the computer you are sitting at and the computer you want to control.

On Security

Only log in from a PC which you trust is secure and do not choose to remember any passwords if the computer is not your own – otherwise you may allow someone else to reconnect to your machine after you are done.  Secondly, never reveal your password to anyone unless you intend for them to access your machine.

On Cost

The LogMeIn remote control service is absolutely free, though if you want to perform more complex tasks such as printing to a local printer or moving files between computers then you can upgrade to a paid service.
