Windows 7 and Disappearing Shortcuts

Over the past few months we’ve had a few calls where some desktop shortcuts have disappeared from users computers. It doesn’t happen very often, but when it does it can be a real pain in the backside for all concerned. It happened again today to one of our own staff.

In our experience the problem occurs because Windows 7 is configured to check for ‘broken’ shortcuts approximately once per week and deletes – without warning – those shortcuts that appear to be broken.

On the face of it this is a great idea from Microsoft, but in practice it is a terrible one. There are plenty of good reasons why a shortcut can be broken. For example you may have a shortcut to an item on a USB stick – which may not be plugged in. Another example is that you may have shortcuts to network programs on your laptop – but when you take the laptop home you may not have access to the network.

With immediate effect, we will be disabling the feature on all Windows 7 desktops and laptops that are prepared at our workshop, so if you buy a new computer from us you’ll never need to worry about the problem again.

If you have this problem, then you can follow this reasonably easy procedure to stop Windows 7 poking it’s nose in where it is not wanted.

  1. Click the Start Button.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Click System & Security.
  4. Click Administrative Tools.
  5. Double-Click Task Scheduler.
  6. Once Task Scheduler has opened, in the leftmost window, using the little triangular arrows, open up Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows, and click Diagnosis.
  7. Now in the top middle window you should see a single task called Scheduled. Disable the task by right-clicking on the task in the list at the top of the window, then close Task Scheduler.

Of course this process does not reinstate your lost shortcuts so you will have to re-create them.
