Emails From Hong Kong – Intellectual Property Rights

This one has been around for a while, but I thought I’d mention it here… one of my clients recently received thisĀ SCAM email from a Hong Kong email address claiming that their domain name was ‘in dispute’. If you receive an email like this, do not reply to it, do not save it, just delete it. It is a scam that will probably end up with the sender trying to get hold of your bank details. Common sense suggests that if there really were an issue with your domain name, the person with alleged IP rights on the domain name would write to you, or would take it up with the domain name registrar.

This is an extract of what was received:

Dear CEO & Principal:

We are a domain name registration and dispute organization in Asia, which mainly deal with the global companies’ domain name registration and Internet Intellectual property right protection. Currently, we have a very important issue needing to confirm with your company.

OnĀ  April 8,2010, we received an application from one company named “******” who wanted to apply for the Network Brand ” domain name” and some related domain names through our organization.

Now we are handling with the registration of these domain names and find that the keyword of these domain names and Network Brand is identical with your company’s. According to our technique department’s investigation, ****** does not have prior rights to this keyword but you do. So we have to confirm with you at two points:

1. If your company consign****** to register these domain names and Network Brand, we will send application form to them and help them finish the registration at once.

2. If your company have nothing to do with ******, they maybe have other purposes to register these names and Network Brand.

We have suspended their application and can not proceed before we get your confirmation. If you are the corporate representative of your company, please reply this email and I will feedback some problems to you; If you are not, please forward my message to the right person or department soon.

Hope that helps!
